What Skydiving Can Bring You In A Hectic Modern World
Skydiving can bring you so much more than just a one off unforgettable experience! When modern life has become too much about meeting the demands of everyone and everything else. The demands of our employers, the demands of our families and the expectations of society often consume the time and energy we have for ourselves. There is an unspoken belief that we should look a certain way, behave a certain way and pursue a certain version of success that is favourable to society. Some of this is natural. We love our children and want the best for them, so we build our lives around their needs. We work hard because security offers comfort in an uncertain world. We take on responsibilities because they matter.
But is that all life is really all about?
Is that what “living” truly means?
Somewhere along the way, many of us stop experiencing life and start managing it. We become consumed by schedules, obligations and routines. Days blur into weeks and weeks blur into years and years blur into decades. We become so focused on getting through life that we forget to actually feel it.
To me, as a skydiver, living is something entirely different.
Living is feeling your heart hammering against your rib cage, your stomach twisting with anticipation and excitement, your palms sweating as the aircraft climbs higher and higher into the sky.
Living is feeling the ice cold droplets of cloud against your face, the rush of wind against your skin and the warmth of the sun breaking through above the weather. It is the smell of clean air thousands of feet above the earth, untouched by traffic, deadlines and the noise of everyday life.
Living is feeling.
Living is sensing.
Living is being.
For a few brief moments, there is no mortgage payment to worry about. No inbox demanding attention. No expectations to fulfil. No pressure to be anything other than exactly who you are in that moment.
There is only now. And you. And the universe.
During your skydive, your mind stops replaying yesterday and stops trying to predict tomorrow. The endless internal chatter that occupies so much of modern life falls, temporarily silent. And in the silence, you get to learn who you really are and what you are capable of.
You are simply present.
And perhaps that is the greatest gift skydiving offers.
Most people think a skydive is about adrenaline. They imagine it is about thrill seeking, adrenaline junky type bravery or proving something to others when, in reality, it is often the opposite. It’s about proving something to yourself. It’s about giving something to yourself. A gift to yourself that is a moment only for you.
Skydiving has a remarkable way of stripping life back to its essentials. It removes the distractions, the titles, the responsibilities and the expectations. For a few unforgettable minutes, you meet yourself without all the things society says you should be.
And in doing so, you remember something important.
You are not here simply to survive.
You are here to live.
